The term 'neuromuscular system' refers to the muscles and the nerves that pass messages to and from muscles to the brain. This system can be affected by stroke, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury and rarer conditions such as Charcot-Marie Tooth (CMT). The team at SORSC are specialists in reconstruction and deformity correction from spasticity (abnormal muscle tightness) and muscle weakness that may result from these and other conditions affecting the neuromuscular system.
Soft tissue defects can occur due to trauma in an accident, or after other major surgery like cancer removal. The team at SORSC are specialists in functional and aesthetic soft tissue reconstruction of injuries to upper and lower limbs, scar tissue management and reconstruction related to cancer treatments.
Peripheral nerves are those nerves outside the spinal cord and the brain, and where these are damaged or injured, surgery may be required to restore feeling and function in the affected areas. SORSC specialists perform a range of procedures to treat conditions affecting peripheral nerves, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, complex brachial plexus injuries and thoracic outlet syndrome.
Trauma – sudden impact to the body, such as in car accidents and falls – often results in bone fractures as well as soft tissue damage. The team at SORSC treat all trauma and fracture injuries with both surgical and non-surgical (conservative) treatment, including anything from simple ankle and wrist fractures to major long bone and pelvis trauma, and corrective surgery to treat consequences of trauma.
The ankle and foot is a complex part of the body comprising 26 bones and 33 joints! The two most common problems with the ankle and foot are degenerative conditions (such as arthritis), and sprains and instability, often occurring while engaged in sport. SORSC specialists perform a range of procedures to treat conditions affecting the ankle and foot, such as arthroscopy ('keyhole' or 'minimally invasive' surgery), bunion correction and ankle joint replacements.
There are two very common, broad types of problems affecting the knee – injury and osteoarthritis. Common injuries affecting the knee include injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and tears in the cartilage in the knee (meniscus). The team at SORSC treat all conditions affecting the knees, and carry out a range of procedures including knee arthroscopy (keyhole surgery), knee replacement and revision knee replacement.
Injury to the shoulder can not only cause pain but also severely restrict range of movement of the arm. Shoulder injuries are relatively common, especially injuries to the group of muscles and tendons around the shoulder called the 'rotator cuff'. SORSC specialists perform a range of procedures to treat shoulder injuries, including stabilisation, arthroscopy (keyhole surgery), treatment for rotator cuff injury and bone fractures, as well as total or reverse shoulder replacements.
Problems with the hip joints are more common as we age, with arthritis of the hip and loss of bone tissue (osteoporosis) some of the leading causes of hip problems. A seemingly minor fall can cause a fracture in someone with bone tissue loss. Specialists at SORSC treat a range of conditions that can affect the hips, including osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis and fractured neck of femur. The team also perform hip replacement and revision hip replacement procedures.
The elbow joint is vulnerable to injury, which can be in an accident where there is trauma to the elbow, or due to repetitive injury in sports like golf and tennis. Arthritis can also affect the elbow joint. Specialists at SORSC treat all types of injury to the bones, muscles and ligaments of the elbow and perform a number of procedures including elbow arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) and partial or complete elbow joint replacement.
Conditions affecting the hand and wrist are fairly common and can be incredibly debilitating, making common activities for work and leisure painful or impossible. SORSC specialists treat a range of injuries and conditions affecting the hand and wrist including fractures, tendon and nerve injuries, hand and wrist arthritis, Dupuytren's contracture and trigger finger, and children’s hand surgery including congenital hand difference.
